El vestido del baile de Lady Di y John Travolta en la Casa Blanca, a subasta 35 años después

Hay imágenes inolvidables, como también hay vestidos que se quedan grabados para siempre en nuestra memoria. Y la foto de Lady Di con un imponente look de fiesta bailando con John Travolta en la Casa Blanca hace 35 años que es una de ellas. Ahora, ese inolvidable diseño vuelve a estar de actualidad porque, por tercera vez, sale a subasta.

Arguably the most iconic and memorable gown Princess Diana ever wore, second only to her wedding dress:⁠⠀ .⁠⠀ The midnight-blue velvet evening gown by Victor Edelstein, worn to attend the White House State dinner on the 9th November, 1985, where she famously danced with John Travolta⁠⠀ .⁠⠀ Victor Edelstein made dresses for Princess Diana over an eleven-year period. She would often pop into his shop at 3-4 Stanhope Mews and look through the collections whilst her security guard waited outside. The Princess saw this model in his studio in burgundy and requested it be made for her in midnight blue. The fittings for the gown took place in her private apartments at Kensington Palace. At the last fitting, Princess Diana was so delighted with the final result that she rushed to show it to Prince Charles. Mr Edelstein recalls that the Prince, who appeared in full regimental dress (as he had an official engagement that day), told the Princess that she looked wonderful in the gown and that it would be perfect to wear with jewels⁠⠀ .⁠⠀ Falling alluringly off the shoulders and with a diagonally-swathed velvet skirt which hugs the figure tightly to the knee, then flaring out into a broad flounce above layered tulle petticoats, this is one of the most glamorous gowns she ever wore. And it was clearly a favorite, being worn for at least five further Royal engagements⁠⠀ .⁠⠀ Poignantly, Princess Diana chose this gown 12 years later to wear for the last official portrait ever taken of her. El ‘dress code’ marcaba un estilo elegante, de fiesta, pero recatado. Sin embargo, Lady Di quiso convertirse por una noche en una estrella de Hollywood, y eligió el que, con permiso de su ‘vestido de la venganza’, es su look más icónico y recordado: su foto bailando con John Travolta al ritmo de ‘Grease’ (o, quizá, de ‘Fiebre del sábado noche’, qué más da) con este diseño de Victor Edelstein dio la vuelta al mundo.

El famoso vestido de la Princesa Diana fue un encargo al propio Edelstein, uno de sus diseñadores de cabecera, después de verlo en el escaparate de su tienda de Kensington. El original era granate, y Lady Di lo quería azul noche. El resultado ya es historia de la moda: un imponente diseño de terciopelo con escote ‘off the shoulders’, silueta sirena con ligero volumen en la falda y sensual abertura delantera que la ‘reina de corazones’ combinó con una impresionante gargantilla.

Más de tres décadas después de aquel inolvidable baile (en noviembre de 1985), el icónico vestido de Lady Di, el mismo que lució en su último retrato oficial 12 años después, vuelve a salir a subasta por tercera vez el 9 de diciembre (la primera fue en 1997, y la segunda, en 2013) en la casa Kerry Taylor Auctions, donde se calcula que alcance un valor entre los 300.000 y los 400.000 euros.
